List two Fundamental Rights in the Constitution that Dalits can draw upon to insist that they be treated with dignity and as equals. Re-read the Fundamental Rights listed on page 14 to help you answer this question.

Right to Equality

Article 14 of the Indian Constitution guarantees equality before the law and equal protection of the laws to all citizens, irrespective of their background, caste, or religion. Dalits can use this right to demand equal treatment and opportunities without any discrimination.

Right Against Untouchability

Article 17 of the Indian Constitution prohibits the practice of untouchability. It ensures that Dalits cannot be discriminated against or treated as inferior because of their caste, and they have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.

Re-read the story on Rathnam as well as the provisions of the 1989 Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Now list one reason why you think he used this law to file a complaint.

Reason for Using the 1989 Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act

Rathnam may have used this law to file a complaint because he was a victim of discrimination or violence due to his caste. The 1989 Act provides legal protection to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes against atrocities and discrimination. It ensures that such individuals have a legal recourse to seek justice and protection from caste-based violence or exploitation.

Why do Adivasi activists, including C.K. Janu, believe that Adivasis can also use this 1989 Act to fight against dispossession? Is there anything specific in the provisions of the Act that allows her to believe this?

(b) Identify a marginalised community in your locality. Write a poem, or song, or draw a poster etc to express your feelings as a member of this community.
